Start with your threat model: public Wi-Fi safety, ISP privacy, streaming, travel, torrenting, or serious anonymity. A VPN helps with some of these and does not solve all of them.
Prioritize evidence
Look for audits, transparent ownership, open-source apps, clear logging policies, and visible limitations.
Check renewal pricing
The cheapest advertised monthly price often requires a long upfront term and may renew much higher.
Test your devices
Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, routers, and TVs can have very different app quality.
Avoid overclaims
A VPN does not make you anonymous by default, stop phishing, or remove every tracking method.
